If you aren't yet familiar with High Performance West, we suggest you go check out their website right now. The Portland-based training group performed exceptionally well on Saturday in San Francisco at the USATF Club Cross Country Championships, finishing second overall in the women's open race.
The squad, led by ninth place finisher Kristen Rhode and top 30 finishes from Tara Erdmann-Welling and Nicole Blood, scored 107 points, well behind BAA High Performance's 28 points, but ahead of Team Northwest's third place score of 156.
Another top result in the women's open race came from the Bowerman Track Club placing fourth overall behind Carrie Dimoff's 30th place finish.
On the men's side, Brooks Beasts' Garrett Heath, who placed second in the 1,500m at the 2015 Portland Track Festival behind Evan Jager, won with a ferocious kick, overtaking Boulder TC's Jonathan Grey in the final 200 meters to win the 10k race in 29:06. Former University of Portland All-American Scott Fauble, who now runs for HOKA ONE ONE NAZ Elite, placed third overall, while former University of Oregon All-American Trevor Dunbar placed fourth.
Arguably the most surprising performance of the day, and only because he's known as a 1,500m specialist, came from former Duck and Cleveland High School grad Daniel Winn. Winn placed himself among the top ten early on and never lost contact, finishing in sixth place overall.
In the Master's races, Bowerman Track Club once again showed strong in the Men's Master's 40+ race, capturing the team title behind top nine overall finishes from Gregory Mitchell (2), John Howell (6) and Oscar Bauman (9).
Elsewhere, Team Red Lizard placed fourth as a team in the Women's Master's Race (6k), following the lead of Chris Kimbrough, who placed third overall. Bowerman Track Club's Monty Schafer placed an impressive eighth overall in the Men's Master's 60+ Race (8k).
