EUGENE, Ore. – Are you ready for Team Eaton?
Track and field’s most famous couple – University of Oregon alums Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton – and their esteemed coach, Harry Marra, will be the featured guests at the next TrackTown Tuesday town hall meeting at the Downtown Athletic Club on March 3. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a social hour, followed by the free one-hour show at 7 p.m.
Eaton is the reigning World Champion and Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon. The Oregon Track Club Elite star set the world record of 9,039 points at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at historic Hayward Field. Last year, he took a break from the multi-events. Instead, he made his debut in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a personal best of 48.69 seconds. Eaton closed the season ranked sixth in the world in the 400m hurdles by Track & Field News magazine.
Eaton and Theisen-Eaton have already secured berths in the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing this summer for Team USA and Canada, respectively. This allows them to compete in the prestigious Hypo Meeting in Götzis, Austria, May 30-31. Eaton will be 21 months removed from his last decathlon when he competes in Austria, while Theisen-Eaton won the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games last summer. They will each compete in selected events during the upcoming outdoor season, including a possible return to Hayward Field at the UO Twilight Meet on May 8.
In keeping with the night’s “multi-event” theme, UO senior Dakotah Keys will be on hand to talk about his final outdoor season as a Duck athlete. Keys, who will be accompanied by a member of the UO coaching staff, placed third in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships last year with a PR of 8,068 points. The three-time Pac-12 champion ranks No. 4 all-time at Oregon. He has a chance to become the first athlete in conference history to win four decathlon titles at the 2015 Pac-12 T&F Championships, May 9-10 at UCLA.
Those in attendance at TrackTown Tuesday will also learn more about plans for the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships, March 18-20 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. There also will be random prize drawings for single-day tickets to the NCAA Championships (June 10-13) and USATF Championships (June 25-28) at Hayward Field.
TrackTown USA President Vin Lananna will be the host of the festivities with former UO three-sport standout Jordan Kent serving as master of ceremonies. There will be free coffee, tea and soft drinks, $5 appetizers and Hop Valley Brewing Co. will be pouring $3 pints of beer. Free parking is available in the adjacent Overpark. No validation is required after 5 p.m.
